Venetia Kapernekas Fine Arts, Inc. is pleased to present the first New
York solo show by Adriana Arenas Ilian titled "race factory".
"race factory" is an installation that comprises of a two channel video
component, digital reproductions of a set of "Casta" paintings made by
an unknown Mexican artist (circa 1780) and a genealogical tree of a
traditional family from the artist's hometown.
The video component creates a space of reflection through scale and
rhythm: in a flirtatious, soundless dance, projected on a large screen,
the artist defines the image of herself by watching "others"- small
figures dressed in period costumes swirling on the screen of a small
TV monitor. Another component of the exhibition are digital prints
based on "Casta" paintings which were commissioned by the Spanish
crown in colonial times to illustrate a fictitious yet enforced social order
through depictions of families. Each painting in the full set of sixteen,
represents a possible combination of races and their roles within the
society is then determined by this classification of race. The last
component of "race factory" is based on an embroidery of a
genealogical tree made in the artist's hometown in the beginning of the
century. It represents the blood relations of one of the town's founding
families. Although founders of Pereira where merchants and peasants,
they very quickly adopted customs and hierarchies of the colonial
society.
Born in Pereira/Colombia the artist lives and works in New York. Her
work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions including Greater
New York at PS1, Cross Roads at Casa de la Moneda (Bogota),
OpenSpace (Milan) and Palazzo Tupputi (Bisceglie - Italy).
