Carlos Carle', Distant Presences

Palazzo Moroni, Padova

comunicato stampa

The Third Edition of the annual Open Air Sculpture Exhibition "The Substance. Locus of Form", on Sunday 7 May 2000 at 11.30 a.m., will present, in the Sala Rossini of the Pedrocchi building, the exhibition "CARLOS CARLE'. Presenze lontane ".

After the exhibitions dedicated to Antonio Ievolella, Simon Benetton and Romano Abate, the new edition of the open air sculpture exhibition, promoted by the Culture Committee and curated by Gian Franco Martinoni and Enrico Gusella, intend to relate sculpture to the city architecture, creating a suggestive path long via VIII febbraio, Palazzo Municipale, Piazzetta Pedrocchi. Moreover, inside the ex Scuderie di Palazzo Moroni there will be displayed other small and medium-sized sculptures by Carlos Carle'.

Eight sculptures will be placed in the historic centre of the city. They are primary elementary architectures: dolmen, menhir, pilaster, accumulations which remind us of the ancient forms of human creation. Carlé's sculptures are made of grès blocks, which aim to represent primordial geometric figurations: the sphere, the cube, the parallelepiped, marked with monochrome tones which are emphasised by glazes and spots of oxide. Every form worked by Carlos Carlé consist of a work on the skin of the sculpture, which is cut, lacerated, engraved, incised, scratched. The carvings prolong the matter outside, as if he wants to open the more secret places of the matter, creating a dynamic dialectic between the matter and the space around in order to show an unknown internal dimension and to predispose the surface to effects of lights and shades .
His works are not predetermined, but they grow up little by little during the creative moments, his disruptive force bring a sense of peremptory monumentality. This is the main sign of a work that has a primitive sonority, not far from the one of some archaeological findings: it is something archaic, rudimental, rough. The substance of the work of Carlos Carlé can be read as a sort of "anamnesis", of research and dialogue with the far past.
"My works fluctuate between instinct and reason, between rationality and organic matter" the artist says. This is the easily balance that characterise all his work and it is perhaps one of the most singular conditions of much of modern art.

Biography

Carlos Carlé was born in 1928 in the province of Oncativo, Argentina. His first contact with ceramics dates back to the time when his father owned a fire-brick factory, where he made his first works. After experimenting with different materials, he focussed his interests on grés, the hardest substance in ceramics, as area of research and plastic expression. By the end of 1940's, he started to study ceramics, drawing and sculpture in Buenos Aires; he joined the group "Artesanos", the first avant-garde group in the post-war Argentina. In the 1959 he was one of the founder of the Argentine Ceramics Art Centre. Carlos Carlé also tried to experiment with different techniques in moulding iron, stone and bronze. He worked in several ceramic workshops in Argentina, Brazil, Netherlands, Denmark and Italy, to where he moved in 1963. He worked for nearly one year in Vietri sul Mare, an important ceramic centre, then he moved to Albissola Marina. His staying in Albissola brought many Ligurian artists to use grés, material almost unused up to that time. From the 1950's his works have gained international awards and acknowledgements. From 1972 Carlos Carlé has been senior member of the Ceramic International Academy of Geneva. In 1998 he was asked to create a monumental sculpture for the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan . His works are displayed in several museums and private collections all over the world, i.e., the International Museum of Ceramics of Faenza, the National Museum of Ceramics of Sèvres, the North Central Washington Museum of Wenatchee and the Museum Juan B. Castignino of Rosario. He has been on important juries at Rosario -Argentina -, the Biennale in Vallauris, Faenza and Santo Stefano diCamastra.
The Exhibition "Carlos Carlé. Distant Presences" is promoted in collaboration with the Town of Albissola Marina and the Anna Osemont Art Gallery, Albissola (SV).
The exhibition present the new catalogue published by Mazzotta, edited by Enrico Gusella, with the texts of Luciano Caramel and Enrico Gusella and the articles of Giustina Mistrello Destro, Mayor of Padua, Giuliano Pisani, Culture Committee Chairman, and Gian Franco Martinoni, Culture Section Director.
