Referencing the mechanics of collage, the exhibition presents artworks fabricated from complete singular elements. Whilst these combinations result in an autonomous work, the discrete elements still maintain their individual properties. The artists in the show use varying methods that include assembling groups of objects, following particular steps or tasks, going through multiple processes to create one work amongst others.
Referencing the mechanics of collage, Separate Entities presents artworks fabricated from
complete singular elements. Whilst these combinations result in an autonomous work, the
discrete elements still maintain their individual properties. The artists in the show use varying
methods that include assembling groups of objects, following particular steps or tasks, going
through multiple processes to create one work amongst others. For example, Andy Cross
produces large paintings that use other, smaller paintings as their base and Sarah Braman
constructs sculptures that involve materials brought together with minimal intervention.
The show demonstrates the concept beyond material concerns, allowing for the inclusion of
collaborations and exterior projects within the theme. Matt Keegan and Amy Granat collaborate
on a series of photographs and a 16 mm film, while Keegan also participates in the exhibition
with solo works. Tamar Halpern has produced a series of posters that will be installed around the
neighborhood. The work is separated from the gallery so it can be seen by a wider audience,
but also to become immersed amongst advertisements and the visual clutter of the city. The
exhibition will also include painting, sculpture and performances by Jacob Robichaux.
The exhibition was co-curated with Natalia Mager Sacasa.
