The 2nd edition of the Triennial focuses on the increasing influence of the narrative element or the metaphor within contemporary arts, fashion and design. The disciplines are approached from their own individual character, but also the shared connections, brought about by the 'narrative', play an important role. 'Super' remains part of the title, due to its recognisability and quality label. The word 'Stories' refers to the growing influence of the narrative element, the metaphor, in different artistic disciplines.
curated by Koos Flinterman
From February 7 until May 10 2009 the city of Hasselt is proud to present, in
collaboration with a number of cultural partners, SuperStories, the 2nd edition of the
Triennial for contemporary art, fashion and design.
The first edition (fall 2005) was a great success, due to its alluring program which attracted
more than 25.000 visitors. The main title “SUPER!”, which accompanies each new
edition of the Triennial, stands for quality and enthusiasm.
The starting point of the first edition of this triennial, under the artistic directorship of Edith
Doove, was the crossover between disciplines such as contemporary art, fashion and design.
Experienced curator Koos Flinterman is the artistic director of this new edition.
Koos Flinterman wishes to focus on the increasing influence of the narrative element or the
metaphor within contemporary arts, fashion and design. The disciplines are approached from
their own individual character, but also the shared connections, brought about by the
‘narrative’, play an important role. SUPER remains part of the title, due to its recognisability
and quality label. The word STORIES refers to the growing influence of the narrative
element, the metaphor, in different artistic disciplines. This general inclination to centre on
the narrative element is the starting point of departure of the exhibitions, lectures,
workshops and educational activities of the SuperStories programme.
The route: the city and the cultural houses
The stage of the triennial is the city of Hasselt itself, formed by a route that starts from the
Uitwinkel and passes by several cultural houses, which are all on walking distance and
spread throughout the centre of Hasselt. The locations include Cultuurcentrum Hasselt,
Modemuseum, Nationaal Jenevermuseum, Kunstencentrum Z33, Kunstzaal Onder de Toren,
and CIAP.
The exhibitions: presentation and creation projects
On the one hand, the exhibitions will link up with the narrative theme of SuperStories, on
the other hand, the participating cultural houses will clearly maintain their own individual
character.
PART I: Cultuurcentrum Hasselt:
Visual art:
By analogy with the ‘stories’ theme, the Cultuurcentrum will present artists who work with
digital and audiovisual material. The large foyers of the Cultuurcentrum are usually serve as
exhibition spaces. As a part of SuperStories, a number of installations will be created that
will reshape the spatial environment, by using projections and screens. During the triennial,
the foyer will have a whole identity of its own.
Aside from the visual work that will be shown here, there will also be 3 performances in
function of the Triennial and on the theme of SuperStories.
Performing arts:
Contemporary dance often appeals to contemporary artists and (fashion) designers.
The Cultuurcentrum will programme contemporary dance productions in the main hall, in
which design and fashion play an essential role.
CCHA presents three performances that are connected to the theme of the exhibition:
Big names will make their way to Limburg and hit the stage of CCHA:
_ Hotel Modern _ Kamp / noordenwindA wordless performance that will leave you speechless. If ‘impressive’ is the right word for a
performance, then it is for this one.
The performance is part of the Noordenwind series in which CCHA gives you a taste of new
theatre talent from The Netherlands.
_ Kris Verdonck _ I/II/III/IV/ contemporary dance

free introductory lecture 19h15
I/II/III/IIII is a theatrical installation. By analogy with a puppet theatre, performance artist
Kris Verdonck transforms the scene into a “human theatre”. Four ‘identical’ female dancers
hang like marionettes in a huge machine. Together with them Verdonck generated a
passage of choreography: a solo, a duet, a trio and a pas de quatre.
_ Muziektheater Transparant & B'Rock _ Waar is mijn ziel?/ Madrigalen van Claudio
Monteverdi
Fri. 17 Apr 09 _ concertzaal _ 20h _ € 18 normal ticket price _ € 16.5 reduced ticket price _ € 15 season ticket
free introductory lecture 19h15
In addition to his religious music, Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) also composed a number
of madrigals; compositions in search of human emotions. In these madrigals the text seems
inseparably bound up with the music and Monteverdi’s interpretation of the text clearly
comes to the foreground through the musical interventions and accents.
PART II: Kunstencentrum Z33
The theme of the triennial is brought in connection with architectonic conditions. The
building of Z33 itself, as an exponent of post-war construction, is the point of departure.
Artists Krijn de Koning and Germaine Kruip will create a work especially for the space of
Z33. Within the given theme, Z33 also wishes to generate interesting confrontations
between artists and designers, in which the ‘object’ plays a central role.
PART III: Modemuseum Hasselt
The Modemuseum accounts for fashion-related presentations. The museum will host 2 large
presentations by a fashion photographer and a jewellery designer respectively.
It will also focus on contemporary fashion by showing young independent designers,
selected by renowned international designers and fashion journalists.
PART IV: Kunstzaal Onder de Toren
In kunstzaal Onder de Toren there will be a presentation around objects and products by
several artists and designers.
PART V- The End: Nationaal Jenevermuseum
The presentations in the Nationaal Jenevermuseum will tie in with the permanent
installation. The rooms and the interior design of the Nationaal Jenevermuseum are an
exhibition in itself. In the permanent installation of the museum there are thematic
connections which make the experience of contemporary art in this environment unique.
Sideshows:
The CIAP gallery will present work by Koen Vanmechelen.
This all results in a dynamic project which does not limit itself to the mere
presentation of work, but where artists and (fashion) designers are also actively
involved in the event.
SuperStories is not only about ‘presentation’, but also about ‘creation’.
Will participate in the SuperStories exhibitions:

Communication:
The graphic design will be carried out by Studio Sara De Bondt in London and Geoffrey
Brusatto from Hasselt. Sara De Bondt is a Belgian graphic designer based in London. She
has worked, among others, for The Camden Artcentre, Victoria & Albert Museum and
Barbican Artgallery in London, for the Biennial for Video Art Contour in Mechelen, Design
Vlaanderen and Kunstencentrum Wiels in Brussels. Her work has been published in
magazines and books. Geoffrey Brusatto also works primarily for cultural houses and
organisations. His graphic designs are largely based on abstract imagery with an enormous
passion for typography. The tactile aspect is also an important quality in his work.
For SuperStories, this occasional duo has designed a unique communication concept that
plays with different ways of telling a story (diary, newspaper, handwritten letter, tabloid,
book, ...).
The form-specific qualities of these narrative media are not simply transposed from one
medium to the other, but are switched around in order to create greater tension. The
letterhead becomes a page from a novel, the name cards become envelopes and the
envelope becomes a postcard. Thus, the communication becomes a substantial part of the
triennial.
Because of the diversity of the imagery, the colour red is used as a binding element; the
monotone typography and images bring the communication together and make it
recognizable as a whole. The colour red also refers to the first edition of Super in 2005. The
logo consists of two S’s intertwined (one for Super and one for Stories). Together they form
one line, like a route through the city or a story with no beginning and no end.
Promotion
Through an intensive media and promotion campaign SuperStories wishes to reach a wide
audience. A special communication strategy will also be developed for the national and
international art and culture consumer.
By continually interacting with the press, we will try to generate as much media attention as
possible.
Accessibility: experiential education
A project like SuperStories, which aspires to be widely accessible without losing quality,
needs a strong audience development programme and an elaborate educational unit. Aside
from traditional guided tours, SuperStories will also programme valuable and original
educational activities that evolve around perception and experience, in collaboration with the
educational departments of the participating cultural houses. A well worked-out publication
will accompany these activities.
Guided programmes and workshops will be developed for schools and groups, and evening
tours will be organised for companies, organisations and institutions.
In collaboration with a few Hasselt hotels SuperStories will also provide a number of tourist
accommodation arrangements.
SuperStories – the book
The publication of SuperStories will connect to the theme of the project, but in a broader
perspective, it will also focus on how the crossover and the relations between the different
disciplines evolve. It intends to be more than an exhibition catalogue.
The book will consist of short texts and visual material of the participating artists and
designers, but it will also explore the ever-changing relations between contemporary arts
and design, with a number of in-depth essays by Louise Schouwenberg, Guus Beumer and
Ann van Sevenant.
Ann van Sevenant will illustrate the notion that the three disciplines, art, design and fashion,
do not allow border crossing. Schouwenberg and Beumer will write about the ‘narrative’
element in design, fashion and contemporary arts.
For the publishing of the catalogue SuperStories will work together with Stichting Kunstboek
which will incorporate the publication into their publisher’s list and promote the book in local,
national and international bookstores. Stichting Kunstboek will distribute the SuperStories
catalogue in The Netherlands and Belgium. The publication will also be for sale through
exclusive and specialised distributors in the rest of Europe, the United States and via the
major Asian markets.
