The depiction of the body throughout art history
has been a long and complex one. From
traditional imaging of the body in the
Rennaissance, religious iconography, Greek
kouros figures and the nineteenth century venus
figure, notions of identity have been constructed
through specific representations of the body in
art.
Come view an exciting variety of contemporary
artworks dealing with issues which include
performance, abjection, masquerade, disability,
fragmentation, depiction of children, 'othering',
exoticism, power, control and identity, as
confronted by a wide range of artists. The artists
have used an innovative and eclectic selection
of mediums and techniques to play on
representations of the body in art. These include
video, photography, sculpture, drawing, painting,
installation, performance and puppetry.
The exhibition will represent artworks by
selected students from Unisa, Pretoria
Technikon, Pretoria University, and professional
artists. The exhibition will be used to coincide
with our student workshops in May. The
exhibition will be open to the public.
You are also invited to a forum, on 16th May, at
19h00, in the gallery to discuss art and the body
in contemporary Fine Arts practice.
The Unisa Art Gallery is situated in Pretoria, at the University of South Africa Main Campus,
Theo Van Wijk Building, B-Block, 5th Floor.
