Drawing Object Installation
From Saturday March 23rd, 2002 Gallery N. von Bartha is proud to present an
exhibition of works by the British artist Douglas Allsop. The exhibition
will be on view until May 11th. The show will include works on paper from a
series entitled 'Transparent Drawing', a 'Blind Screen' installation and a
work from a recent series entitled "Reflective Editor".
Douglas Allsop's works are primarily concerned with the nature of human
perception. Using a number of different and specifically designed devices,
the works deliberately change the viewer's apprehension. The purity and
accuracy of the execution directly draw the viewer's attention away from
their surroundings and into the works. This becomes apparent when looking at
works such as a 'Blind Screen' installation in which bands of videotape
reflect as well as divide a space and change the comprehension of the area
behind the work. Allsop often explores this relationship of space between a
viewer, the surface of a piece and the imaginary and actual space beyond th
e work.
The 'Transparent Drawing' series from which works will be exhibited in this
show are made using an XY plotter, which is programmed by the artist.
Drawing on a non-absorbent synthetic paper, lines of ink bleed into
previously drawn lines of water and are then left to slowly dry on the
surface. The emphasis lies again on execution and definition of space; the
ink of a drawing sits on a sheet of paper rather then being absorbed by it;
lines outline rather then fill areas and the viewer's interaction with the
piece completes the drawing.
Douglas Allsop has been the Director of Studies at the Byam Shaw School of
Art in London since 1995 and lecturer at the Royal College of Art painting
school for the past ten years. He has recently had his first mid career
retrospective, covering his oeuvre over the past thirty years at the
"Emschertal Museum", Herne and the "Städtisches Museum", Gelsenkirchen in
Germany. He has shown extensively in Group and Solo exhibitions and his wor
k is represented in a number of private and public collections across Europe
and the United Kingdom as well as in the United States. The exhibition at
Gallery N. von Bartha precedes a museum show at the Southampton City Art
Gallery, which will open later this summer.
