I am from where I am
“I AM FROM WHERE I AM” Is an exhibition that explores my childhood memories of a small village in Cavan called Gowna. Full of mystery and wonder, constantly fuelling my young imagination – Gowna was the place my grandfather, Hugh Murray, called home.
My grandfather knew many things. He could fish, collect honey, grow food, make jam and cut turf. He knew the history and original Gaelic name of every townland we travelled through. He reclaimed those names with decided relish as an act of defiance over the Anglicisation of his beloved country. Seanachai at heart, he would tell us stories about the great hero’s of Odysseus and CuHulainn, their epic voyages and constant challenges . His world and his words painted pictures that filled the canvas of my youthful mind. Imagination unlocked, I have respectfully transported these images from the blur of youthful innocence, through the realties of adult ponderings and, ultimately, to the walls of the gallery.’
