'from the middle through the middle'
In her first solo exhibition in Scotland Hana Sakuma presents new
installation work at The Changing Room.
At the centre of the exhibition is a large work where extracts from
second hand books are written in chalk onto a blackboard, then partially
obscured. The extracts are death scenes taken from a type of popular
literature that used to be read by a wide audience in Britain, but is
now often discarded. Alongside this piece is a series of smaller works
that play on notions of nourishment, protection and vunerability.
Hana's work seeks to reveal gaps in what she calls a 'state of
untranslatability' from her experience of living in Britain as a
foreigner for many years.
Hana Sakuma was born in 1970 in Osaka, Japan and is currently based in
London where she is undertaking a PhD at Chelsea College of Art &
Design. Recent and forthcoming solo exhibitions include 'It's not a
matter of guilt' The Economist, commissioned by Contemporary Art
Society, London 1999; 'Hana Sakuma', Kojimachi Gallery, Tokyo, 2000;
'Unframing Process', CAS, Osaka, 2000; 'Hana Sakuma' art.tm, Inverness
(13 April - 25 May) 2002. She has also worked on numerous collaborative
projects with artists and curators including 'The rest of the story',
London, 2000; 'Sky Map', Cardiff & London, 2001 and the video screening
'Scramble' which will be toured throughout the UK in 2002.
