Galerie Kapinos is pleased to announce the first solo
exhibition by Duesseldorf based artist René Zeh and would like
to invite you to a
reception for the artist on Friday, 5th April 2002, from 7pm -
9pm.
The exhibition presents sculptural and photographic works.
Tobias Berger on the recent work of René Zeh:
Rome or Rio, sex or Bratwurst, surfboard or artwork. Questions
that oscillate between art and life determine the work of the
Duesseldorf artist
René Zeh. Several elements repeatedly crop up along the way.
Transporters: with which you can beam yourself to the place in
the world of your choice. As quick as a package deal to the
caribbean can be booked
online. Click and away. Black holes serve in this context not
as vacuums of space, but rather as an interface between
stations. René Zeh's transporters
remind us of the provisional accomodation of the nomadic
homeless, decorated with the city maps of the capitals of the
world.
City maps: available in every bookshop for every large city in
the world. Each city with a different pattern but otherwise the
same: Churches marked
with a cross, rivers in blue and important buildings in red.
On paper it's all the same. Mountains and valleys are as
infrequent as noise, dirt and
slums. You think you'll be able to handle it all, orient
yourself. But things get serious when reality comes out of two
dimensionality... by then
it's usually too late though, and your fold up map will never
fold up properly again.
Travel: package tour adventure in the caribbean, shopping in
New York, a quick weekend away to the Sydney Biennale. Travel
is no longer a luxurious
tour of discovery, it's a nerve-wracking, ostentatious,
prestige-enhancing performance. Everything is possible, and
because everything is possible as
much as possible has to be brought along. Like a cold buffet
at christmas.
New York? Tokyo? Paris. Information becomes omnipresent. You
can dial up to check the weather at home from any place in the
world, with GPS I always
know exactly where I am, and with UMTS I am able to be reached
worldwide. Information explodes and simultaneously implodes.
From globalisation to an all encompassing empire. There is no
longer a centre, merely centres. We are compelled to fly
frequently, spatial and
temporal expansion becomes everyday. We move around more and
more often in four dimensional space, the interface becomes
home. Earlier it was known as
'the means is the end'. Once again art and artists are not
trailing behind. Instead they're out in front. Not
criticising, but instead projecting this
play between art and sociality. More flexible, more
innovative, more beautiful. René Zeh's work begins right here.
René Zeh will be participating in the 8th Baltic Triennial of
International Art, Vilnius, September 2002. http://www.coa.lt
