Sacred Wood

For the Korean people, pines are foundations for their soul (Bae, Bien-U)

For over 25 years, Bae, Bien-U has been taking photographs of the old pine forest which surrounds the kings' shrine of the Shilla Dynasty in the vicinity of Gyeongju. The impressive photographs, from the series Sonamu, represent an important part of the entire work.
Bae, Bien-U's long-standing passion and fascination stem from the Korean culture in which the pine signifies an especially strong symbolic power and, at the same time, is present in literature and other areas of culture. The Koreans regard the pine with great
respect. It is worshipped by the people and it is also their belief that the pine, acting as ambassador, accompanies the soul of the deceased into the world hereafter.

At one and the same time, Bae, Bien-U, views the pine as a connection between heaven and earth. In a unique manner he succeeds in capturing the dramaturgy and magic of this mystical setting, as well as incorporating the energy flow of the trees as a tangible vitality and yet, simultaneously he has the gift to pass this on as a calm, intensive meditation.

Bae, Bien-U
The artist was born in 1950 in Yeosu, South Korea and is known as one of the leading contemporary photographers in his country. He originally studied Graphic-Designing but was so inspired by the works of Edward Weston and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy that, by autodidactic training, he became a photographer. Since 1981, Bae, Bien-U has been teaching photography as a professor at the Seoul Institute of Arts.

Gilles Delmas
Imaginum Pictura

"I think about the person leaning out of a window" (GĂ©rard de Nerval)

In the series "Imaginum Pictura", Gilles Delmas pursues the subject of the observer and the observed.

The photographs of Gilles Delmas which hint at hidden tales, are executed in intensive colours, suffused with light and energy. At times they succeed in being blurred and confused while at others they appear to be obviously clear, only to leave you disoriented anew.

His interpretations are tales in which the documentation disintegrates and is transformed into narrative fiction. Important is the movement of the model in front of the camera and at the same time the movement of the observer. In the end, Delmas' artistic tales are characterized by the haziness of his images.

As a photographer, stage designer, and video artist, Delmas is deliberately engaged in the focused view and the unavoidable decision for a particular cutout. - Windows, which do not reveal, if the view is from the inside looking out or from the outside looking in.
