Working from different traditions, the painting of both Steven Altman and Stephen Lubovich is intensely personal, and somewhat disturbing.
Steven Altman, known in Denver for his abstract work, was in the retrospective exhibit "Colorado Abstraction: 1975-1999" at the Arvada Center for the Arts and
Humanitites, near Denver. His new body of work, "Boys' Dreams", has added figurative elements and text, incorporating non-traditonal materials such as felt on canvases
layered with paper.
Stephen Lubovich paints from the classic still-life tradition, refering to his own work as "the situations". Living in Minnesota in the old iron-ore mining district known as "the
range" and raised in a Serbian speaking family, Lubovich has painted and lived outside of the urban gallery world. His pieces are deeply saturated in colorlush, highly
stylish portraits of domestic display.
With both painters, the need to inhabit a private terrain has pushed them to take their work out of the safety of fulfilled expectationseither the painters' or the viewer's.
Opening reception Friday, April 12, 6 pm-10pm.
