La mostra di Giovanni Cesca, pittore d’area veneziana, porta l’attenzione su due aspetti del territorio: le acque e i grandi spazi declinati nelle infinite variazioni dei cieli. Gli affascinanti scenari sono dati dai fiumi, dai canali dell’entroterra e dalle polle d’acqua fresche e trasparenti che intersecano ampie campagne, mentre sul versante marino vediamo le lagune con un accenno discreto a Venezia, città d’acqua per eccellenza.

Altre opere aprono un ulteriore scenario nel registro del tempo, per introdurci nell’antico mondo dei Veneti che abitavano il territorio prima della romanizzazione. Le “memorie di allora” si intrecciano con “l’esistente attuale” dando origine ad una situazione visiva nella quale presenze metafisiche alitano sommessamente lo spirito originario del luogo.

Chiara Polita, nel breve ma intenso scritto così presenta il variegato mondo del pittore:
Panta rhei, “tutto scorre”, come sosteneva Eraclito, così in questo ciclo di Giovanni Cesca, dedicato alle acque, che in un flusso di emozioni e di storia racconta dolcemente la pura identità del territorio. Infiniti orizzonti di cieli e di umidi specchi sono ciò che caratterizza le terre di bonifica tra Piave e Livenza, fino al mare e alla laguna, in un gioco di preziose screziature cromatiche, di atmosfere intense, afose o fragili e cristalline, continua metamorfosi di sensazioni.

Silenti appaiono a prima vista i paesaggi, ma in realtà cantano l'appassionato assolo di un anima nel quale l'uomo non è assente: è l'occhio che partecipa e contempla ciò che vede, in una dimensione intima e profonda, cogliendo l'irripetibile magia e immensità di tali spazi, nell'attimo senza tempo di un respiro che assorbe quel mondo con tutti cinque i sensi. Diverse sono le tecniche che si susseguono in questo ciclo di Cesca, così come lo spirito che le sottende.

A volte l'artista si libra leggero e coglie in parte dall'alto le dolci distese delle acque, vene ammalianti che scavano di storia e fascino il paesaggio, fino ad annullarsi e a dissolversi nell'aria per diventare cielo, luce e nuvole, nell'incendio di fuoco di un tramonto in laguna o nello squillante annuncio di un alba che squarcia la notte; in altri scorci invece è saldamente legato alla terra, altra forte radice insieme all'acqua, e quasi sfiora quelle liquide superfici, tanto profonde quanto l'empireo, con cui contendono l'azzurro.

Dalla sfera immateriale e astratta di sinfonie di cieli sulla laguna e di atmosfere d'acque del Gorgazzo, specchi reconditi e ancestrali quanto l'eterno quesito della vita, Cesca sapientemente dà voce all'emozione nel colore, che è innanzitutto straordinaria vibrazione anche sull'aria di una stessa corda, come nel caso di “Intenso blu alle fonti del Gorgazzo”.

A questa dimensione quasi spirituale e senza tempo, in cui il fattore cromatico crea lo spazio e la profondità, si alternano limpidi scorci del Piave, del Livenza, di canali di bonifica, fino alle materne avvolgenti acque della Laguna: sono visioni vivide e plastiche che ripercorrono la commozione di un viaggio alla scoperta dell'incanto del territorio, teletrasportando sul posto l'osservatore con la concretezza dello sguardo, senza nulla tralasciare.

La corporeità di tali immagini, vissuta anche attraverso un intenso ciclo di sanguigne, che costituiscono un omaggio a Caorle, ai suoi casoni e alle sue spiagge, popolate di evocative presenze naturali, si integra con un'altra affascinante proposta dell'artista, che in una raffinata e preziosa atmosfera, tra romantico e sublime, gioca tra suggestioni da sogno profuse dai nostri paesaggi: così ad esempio nell’enigma che spira dalle foschie di “Baroque” o nell'impatto turneriano di “Nebbia vermiglia in bacino”, nel quale si annulla la distinzione tra orizzonte d'acqua e di cielo, rendendo Venezia città eterea, avvolta in uno spazio gassoso primordiale; o ancora in “Tramonto sulle brume”, dove l'empireo assume le caratteristiche di una superficie liquida solcata da onde di nuvole salmonate, mentre l'acqua evapora e diventa spazio immateriale, che si fa soffice nuvola, cuscino di una città fragile e sospesa.

E in questo intreccio di sguardi, in cui nulla è come appare, ma invita a procedere oltre, con il cuore e con la mente, riaffiora anche la memoria dei Veneti antichi, la cui storia si fonde con la natura anfibia di questo territorio. Così il tempo dell'acqua di Giovanni Cesca scorre dentro e fuori di noi, rendendoci parte di un unico straordinario paesaggio.

THE TIME OF WATER Endless lines of sky and humid mirrors

Panta rhei “everything flows”, Heraclitus used to say; just like Giovanni Cesca who softly tells us of the pure identity of his land, in this new cycle of his art, related to the water, in a flow of emotions and history. Endless lines of skyes and humid mirrors are typical elements of the drained lands streaching between the Piave and the Livenza rivers, reaching the sea and the lagoon, following a game of precious chromatic specklings, of deep atmospheres, sultry or fragile and transparent, in an ongoing metamorphosis of feelings.

At a first glance, the landscapes look silent, but they actually sing the passionate solo of a soul from which the man is not absent; indeed he represents the eye that partecipates and contemplates what he sees, and an intimate and deep dimension, grasping the unique magic and widht of such spaces, in a timeless moment of a breath that absorbes that world through all five senses. The succeding techniques are various, just as various is the underlying spirit in this cycle of Cesca’s work.

There are moments where the artist is lightly floating in the air and grasps from above the sweet water extents, enchanting veins that dig history and charm the landscape, until they annihilate themselves and vanish in the air to become sky, light, clouds, in the burning fire of a sunset on the lagoon, or in the blare call of a dawn tearing the night apart; in other views it is indeed tighltly connected to the earth, which represents along with water another strong root, and almost skims those liquid surfaces, as deep as the empireous, whose blue they are competing for.

From the bodyless and abstract realm of symphonies of skies on the lagoon and water atmospheres of the Gorgazzo, remote and ancient mirrors just like the eternal question of life, Cesca wisely gives voice to the emotion through colour, which is in first place estraordinary vibration even on the air of a same chord, as it is with “Deep blue at the springs of Gorgazzo”.

To this almost spiritual and timeless dimension, whose chromatic issue creates space and depth, they alternate clear views of Piave, Livenza, canals of the drained land, with the motherly wrapping waters of the Lagoon: these are vivid and plastic visions, going through the emotion of a journey serching for the enchantment of the land, teletransporting the beholder right on spot, with a real glance, without leaving anything behind.

The phisicity of these images, experienced even through a deep cycle of sanguine that are a homage to Caorle, to its “casoni” an its beaches dwelled by evoking natural presences, is integrated by another proposal of the artist who, halfway between romanticism and sublime, plays among the dreamlike suggestions of our landscapes, in a charming and precious atmosphere; thus, for instance in the aenigma emanating from the mists of “Baroque” or in the Turner- like impact of “Red Fog by the dock”, where the line between water and sky fades away, transforming Venice into an ethereal town, wrapped by a primeval gaseous space; or yet in “Sunset on the mists”, where the empyreal assumes the characteristics of a liquid surface crossed by waves of salmon pink clouds, while water evaporates and becomes inmaterial space, soft cloud, cushion of a fragile and suspended town.

In this entanglement of glances, where nothing is what it seems, rather it invites the beholder to go beyond, driven by the heart and mind, the memory of the ancient Venetians appears again, and its history melts into the amphibious nature of this land.
Thus the time of the water of Giovanni Cesca flows inside and outside us, making us part of an extraordinary landscape.
