Ray K. Metzker
Composites
From April 18 - June 15, 2002, Laurence Miller Gallery will present fourteen unique "Composites"
by Philadelphia based artist Ray K. Metzker. Considered by many Metzker’s most important
series, these newly constructed "Composites" have just been assembled from recently
discovered vintage prints made in the mid-60’s. As is his custom to experiment and concentrate on darkroom work each winter, these newly uncovered prints afforded Metzker, at age 70, a fresh opportunity to finally complete a body of work begun over 30 years ago. This will be the first time these newly completed works will be exhibited.
Dodo Jin Ming
free element
Laurence Miller Gallery is pleased to present Free Element, seascapes by Chinese born
photographer Dodo Jin Ming, from April 18 - June 15, 2002. Respecting the awesome power and
drama found only in the sea, Dodo Jin Ming creates violent black and white images that transport
the viewer to a precipice about to be submerged under a cascade of water. Printing her pictures
from a combination of two negatives, one of the sea, the other sky, Ming has intensified the power
of the surging waves by blanketing them under an engulfing sky. Although this technique of
multiple-printing harks back to the mid-19th Century and the majestic and peaceful seascapes of
Gustave LeGray, Dodo Jin Ming’s turbulent images are more akin to the paintings of J.M.W.
Turner and Winslow Homer. We also see strong literary connotations, such as Edgar Allen Poe’s
"Descent into the Maelstrom" and Dante’s "Inferno." Ming made most of her exposures along the
coast of Maine and the outskirts of Hong Kong. Often at great personal risk, she was able to
capture on film the power and rage of the sea that would stir the heart of any sailor. Born in Beijing
in 1955, she trained as a concert violinist before taking up photography. She has exhibited widely
in China and Europe. FREE ELEMENT will be Dodo Jin Ming’s third one-person show at Laurence
Miller Gallery. Ming currently resides in New York City.
Opening in 1983, the Laurence Miller Gallery has concentrated on the
exhibition and sale of museum quality contemporary and vintage fine
art photography. We specialize in American photography since 1940,
Asian photography since 1950, European photography from the 19th
century, and contemporary photo-based art from Europe.
