Various images of little girls, representing the core of human nature, run like a
thread through the works of Chen Ke, one of the most prominent emerging young
artists from China.
Even though references to cartoon art are obvious, when analyzing her works in more
details, elements of Western master artists as well as of traditional Chinese
paintings become visible, creating an exciting tension.
Being keen to experiment, Chen Ke surprises her viewers oftentimes. Not only she
manufactures her own paper, embroiders canvases with beads but also applies oil
color on stretched cotton fabrics being popular in her childhood days.
The 30 year old female artist and her artworks have been shown in art exhibitions
e.g. Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (AUT) and the National Art Museum of
China in Beijing (CN) as well as in various art books and magazines e.g. Aesthetica,
Artmap and Vogue.
Kunstverein Viernheim is delighted to show 'Another Me in the World', Chen Ke's
first institutional solo exhibition held in Europe.
The exhibition gives an overview on works executed between 2004 - 2009.
Parallel to the exhibition, Kehrer Verlag Heidelberg publishes the first monograph
on the artist in English and Chinese language.
Contributing essays are written by Ulrike Münter, Britta von Campenhausen and Li Xu.
Editors of the publication are the Chinese contemporary art experts Cordelia Steiner
and Christoph Noe.
