Atlantis

Space Galeria Priestor, Bratislava

The exhibition wants to by means of artistic approaches reflect the last 20 years in the development of the Central Europe. The core of the project in Slovakia will be site-specific works of visual artists based and realised in the border land area of Slovakia in Bratislava near Austrian borders and near Hungarian borders in Reca. The European history of last 20 years will be reflected by artists from the local perspective in dialogue with the expression of contemporary art. The artists will create pieces of art exclusively related to the specific conditions of specific location.

comunicato stampa

The exhibition Atlantis realised in August 2009 in Bratislava in Slovakia wants to by means of artistic approaches reflect the last 20 years in the development of the Central Europe.

The most important contribution of the project is involvement of the generation of the under-thirties artists among which the recent European history is rarely reflected. Thus the audience will be confronted with a different perspective, in this case of youg artists, most of whom experienced the era of communism personally only in early childhood or didn’t experience it at all and have only secondhand knowledge. Through a variety of art works we will be able to confront the approaches to the past history, especially communist history of the Central European.

The exhibition will be proceeded by workshop taking part in Reca near Hungarian borders where chosen participants /artist/ will be invited to live and work in a close proximity with each others, creating art works related to the specific location and the past 20 years in the history of this region.
Before and during the exhibition we will organise lectures and discussions of professionals from the fields of history, sociology, politics, artists and the general public looking back at the last 20 years from different perspectives of their professions. The results of discussions as well as a workshop and artists projects will be presented at the exhibition in August.

The aim of the project is to contribute to a European debate about identity, migration, the dimensions and the future of democracy reflecting it from the point of view of artists in a dialogue with historians, sociologists and politicians.
Atlantis – Hidden Histories, New Identities unfolds an integrating effect by looking into Central – Eastern and Western identities.
