In her Inner/Outer Circles series, Françoise Issaly explores the illusion of the bi-dimensional space of the canvas playing with multiple layered spaces. Using the traditional technique of glazing, all different spaces are apparent to the eyes, without contradicting each other. This technique allows her to play with infinite layers, and use other mediums such as paper and prints, mixing mediums and techniques.
The shapes she uses in her work are forms and images that she finds in nature around her. They can be more or less recognizable, and in the particular case of this series, she explored the trident (inspired from small sea sponge skeletons) and circles revolving in a spiral (Julia of Crop Circles found in British fields). Even though these two structures seem to be in opposition, they trigger an interest in her: She combines the very large with the miniscule in order to work, beyond shape and context, on the structure of the mere composition and its development; playing on the intermediary spaces, balancing the foregrounds and backgrounds.
