Owen Schmit

When Laurie Frank sold her much celebrated, much loved house to Owen Schmit she thought she was losing a home, not gaining an artist. It was just serendipity that Schmit was accepted into the prestigious MFA program at Art Center College of Design the day of their real estate closing. What self-respecting gallery owner wouldn’t set up a studio visit for the very next day? Schmit’s first solo show, “Footprints On Air”, open’s August 1 at Frank’s Bergamot Station gallery. “I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise that two people who shared a similar aesthetic in houses would see it similarly realized on canvas, and in three dimensional space,” says Frank, “I feel so blessed this year to introduce so much thrilling new talent to the art world”. Schmit, a 2006 graduate of Bard College, follows a sold out show by CalArts freshman, Henry Hopper. Like Hopper, Schmit is also the progeny of a famous father, Eagles bass player Timothy B. Schmit.

Owen paints her childhood as “drenched in music”. Her canvases are symphonic in scale and composed of sweeping, often contradictory movements, which elicit emotional and corporal responses beyond what you can experience with your eyes alone. They are pure abstractions with allusions to both the natural and man-made world. Her light sculptures, geometric compositions of electroluminescent wire (EL wire) are often installed as components of on-stage heavy metal band, trance and techno performance. Programmed to respond visually with the music, they enclose the musicians within light corrals, which she calls “forced togetherness in hyper-reality space”. In the work there exists an uneasy coexistence between an implicit sense of the ominous and a release of boundless joy. Owen Schmit’s exhibition at Frank Pictures Gallery extends through September 8.
