The works of this artist from Providence, Rhode Island, focus on questions of identity, racism and social injustice. Her historical figures, at first sight apparently unsophisticated, mostly black silhouettes, subtly yet brutally combine episodes from the history of the South with images from Walker's own imagination: ''The silhouette was a near perfect solution to a complex project that I set for myself... to try and uncover the often subtle and uncomfortable ways racism, and racist and sexist stereotypes influence and script our everyday lives.''

The works of this artist from Providence, Rhode Island, focus on questions of identity, racism and social injustice. Her historical figures, at first sight apparently unsophisticated, mostly black silhouettes, subtly yet brutally combine episodes from the history of the South with images from Walker's own imagination: "The silhouette was a near perfect solution to a complex project that I set for myself... to try and uncover the often subtle and uncomfortable ways racism, and racist and sexist stereotypes influence and script our everyday lives."
Walker's decision to work with silhouettes is logical, given the fact that she grew up in the South where this art form is very widespread, a region "where a longing for a romanticised and homogenous 'past'... retains all of its former power in the form of dubious arts... Romance novels, pornographic fantasies, cartoons, antique postcards and collectible figurines."
Kara Walker also uses drawings and prints to create this ambivalent combination of racist, decorative and personal images. The exhibition of her works from the Deutsche Bank Collection embraces all media capable of opening up significant new narrative perspectives.
