Mercoledì 14 Ottobre, si inaugura dalle ore 19.00 presso la Changing Role-Roma, Vicolo del bollo 13, "La leggerezza del respiro", prima mostra personale a Roma di Nunzio De Martino

“ ...la pesantezza, la necessità e il valore sono tre concetti intimamente legati tra loro: solo ciò che è necessario è pesante, solo ciò che pesa ha valore... es muss sein!” Milan Kundera, “L’insostenibile leggerezza dell’essere”.

La poetica dell’artista si concentra da sempre sull’indagine del rapporto tra vita e morte attraverso il dispositivo della memoria. E’ infatti il ricordo il punto di passaggio tra la fine di una vita e il suo eterno rinnovarsi in un’altra simile, ma sempre nuova.    
Il lavoro di De Martino si dipana attraverso oggetti prelevati dalla propria intimità che formano un cammino di visioni dentro e fuori dalla dimensione cosciente, in una continua altalena tra sogno e realtà. In questo progetto, in particolare, egli evidenzia come spesso ciò che appare leggero e apparentemente etereo, ha in realtà un forte peso specifico nell'esistenza di tutti.
 
Il rapporto tra corpo e anima come contrapposizione tra materia e spirito, è evidente nel lavoro che dà il titolo alla mostra “La leggerezza del respiro”, rielaborazione fotografica del Cristo del Mantegna dalla quale emerge parallelamente il tema della resurrezione e della persistenza della vita sotto forma di luce, o spirito, che si ripresenta anche ne “l’evento”.

Allo stesso modo l’apparente banalità di un oggetto quotidiano come un ago da cucire che  moltiplicato si carica di significati quasi totemici, riflette sull’importanza dei piccoli gesti  abituali della quotidianità. 

Nucleo centrale della mostra è il gruppo di cinque fotografie che per leggerezza formale ricordano, in certi casi, gli sperimentali fotogrammi dei primi decenni del secolo scorso. Nei suoi scatti l’artista attua una ricostruzione plastica del reale che è essenza creativa della fotografia. ex-porre: estrapolare dalla realtà oggetti apparentemente privi di importanza, leggeri, impalpabili per renderli attori di un’esperienza epifanica.

I suoi rami con spine, rappresentazione del percorso della vita, mostrati tono su tono con estremo dettaglio e pulizia stilistica, rimandano agli inganni semiseri di matrice dadaista e soprattutto surrealista. 
Nunzio De Martino sceglie con cura i suoi soggetti così come i suoi “oggetti”, scavando nella sua memoria storica familiare e nel suo inconscio, utilizzando un processo che oscilla tra ready made e object trouvè assistito, dove l’oggetto esiste nella mente dell’artista ancor prima che nella realtà.

Così accade anche quando ci spinge a vedere un “Landscape” su un foglio bruciato o un’esplosione di vita in un’alba o un abbraccio tra vita e morte in una coppia di bicchieri colorati. Egli innesta un processo “metonimico”  toccando emozioni popolari e familiari che oltrepassano l’ironia e parlando direttamente all’osservatore in un linguaggio contemporaneo.

“The Lightness of Breath”

On Wednesday 14th October, Nunzio De Martino’s first personal exhibition in Rome, “The lightness of breath”, is opened at 7.00 pm at the Changing Role-Rome Gallery, at N.13 Vicolo Del Bollo

The artist’s poetics has always been focused on the inquiry about the relation between life and death through the memory device. In fact, the memory is the point of contact between the end of a life and its eternal turning into a like existence, but always a new one. De Martino’s work unravels through objects that are taken from his own private life and form a sequence of visions in and out of the conscious dimension, through a non-stop swaying between dream and reality. In this project, he particularly highlights that what always appears to be light and apparently ethereal has indeed a strong specific weight in everybody’s existence.

The relation between body and soul as contraposition between matter and mind is clear in the same work by which the exhibition is entitled, “The lightness of breath” – that is a photographic reworking of the “Christ” by Mantegna, where the theme of resurrection and of persistence of life comes out of in parallel, in the form of light or spirit, and it is represented in “The Event”, too.

In the same way the outward triviality of a daily, common object like a sewing needle - that has been multiplied and, therefore, is pregnant with nearly totemic meanings - makes us reflect upon the importance of usual little acts of everyday life.

The central core of the exhibition is the set of five photographs that, as to their formal lightness, are reminiscent of such experimental photo-grams dating back to the first decades of the last century. In his releases the artist makes a plastic reconstruction of reality, that is the creative essence of photography. The verb “ to ex-pose “ means “ to extrapolate”, to take objects, that are light, insubstantial, apparently of no importance, out of their context, out of reality, in order to make them actors of an epiphanic experience.

His spined branches, that are shown through their shades as extremely detailed and stylistically polished, are a representation of the course of life and refer to the half-serious tricks of Dadaist, and above all, of Surrealist derivation.

Nunzio De Martino chooses carefully his subjects as well as his “objects” by digging out of his historical and family memory, and out of his unconscious , by using a process swinging between ready made and object trouvè , where the object exists in the artist’s mind even before existing in the reality.

That happens even when we are driven to see a “Landscape” in a burnt sheet, or an explosion of life in a daylight, or an embrace between life and death in a couple of coloured glasses. He gives origin to a “metonymic” process by drawing family and popular emotions that go beyond irony, and by talking directly to the observer through a contemporary language.
