David Buckingham's working method is aggressive. His art often ends up as a parallel to same. He goes out to the desert and the industrial areas of Los Angeles, and scavenges for metal from dead cars, machinery, and signage. Jerry Bleem brings together the classic icon of the nation and a constructive hand process associated with domesticity. Curtis Readel explores the tensions and attitudes regarding our current economic state through manipulated images. Readel's recent work addresses themes and ideas of history, deteriorated morality, and apocalyptic premonitions.

David Buckingham - As the World Burns

David Buckingham's working method is aggressive. His art often ends up as a parallel to same. He goes out to the desert and the industrial areas of Los Angeles, and scavenges for metal from dead cars, machinery, and signage. Reconstituting this beautifully patinated steel, he cuts and welds it into his signature button-pushing aesthetic.

Nothing is sacred, and usually ends up being a sex, drugs, and rock and roll kind of thing. Of course with art more than thrown in. He has a fondness for vintage design, and often his signs look like theyve been cherry picked off the top of a spire advertising whatever... Buckingham is also a great colorist, and employs car culture indirectly, as much of the material comes abandoned autos... Another great symbol of America's past and present.

Jerry Bleem - Allegiance

Using United States flags (cut into thin strips) as his material and crochet as his technique, Jerry Bleem brings together the classic icon of the nation and a constructive hand process associated with domesticity. Inspired by the way the war in Iraq has been reported [as either disimpassioned stories of national... policy or heart-wrenching accounts of individual soldiers' disrupted lives and deaths], this work documents the time Bleem has spent thinking of the relationship between these two different versions of war.

Rather than taking an ideological stance, he invites a consideration of how the public life of the nation impacts the individual lives of her citizens. Related drawings and collages join the crocheted works and mimic their process of piling up a simple gesture as physical evidence of his musings.

Curtis Readel - Damn Nation

Damn Nation, a collection of relief prints by Curtis Readel, explores the tensions and attitudes regarding our current economic state through manipulated images. In his first exhibition at Packer Schopf Gallery, Readel's recent work addresses themes and ideas of history, deteriorated morality, and apocalyptic premonitions.

Appropriating the monuments found on U.S. currency, their now crumbled edifices expose fragility, the future these structures face and how short-lived empires can be. Reflecting issues of self-indulgence, corruption, and societal downfall, these metaphors signify that nothing is permanent.
