A new painting.
Jay Jopling opened this project room for contemporary art in May 1993 on the first floor of a
building on London's most traditional art dealing street at 44 Duke Street, St James's,
London SW1 - an area of London surrounded by Old Master galleries and specialist art
bookshops sandwiched between Christies and the Royal Academy. The space, which is
quite literally a white cube, was designed by the acclaimed minimalist architect Claudio
Silvestrin.
The central concern, when establishing the programme was to create an intimate space in
which an invited artist might present a single important work of art or a coherent body of work
within a very focused environment. In some way, the idea stems from the memorable
experience of first encountering Walter de Maria's Earth Room in New York.
In the six years of its existence, White Cube has attained an international reputation for
presenting some of the most progressive and challenging art being made today.
