Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) and Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage (ADACH), government entities charged with preserving the Emirate’s heritage and fostering its people’s creativity and engagement with the arts, today revealed details of Abu Dhabi Art, an innovative new platform for modern and contemporary art.
Bringing together an exclusive selection of art galleries from the four corners of the world within an ancient and modern crossroads of culture and trade, Abu Dhabi Art will be a new-model curated art fair, which reflects the changing geography of today´s art world. It will integrate an extraordinarily rich roster of special exhibitions, public programs and cultural events with displays by leading art dealers and emerging, cutting-edge galleries, to create a must-see event for an international audience of collectors, artists, designers, art dealers, curators, critics and art lovers.
Information announced included the identities of more than fifty participating art galleries in the inaugural edition of Abu Dhabi Art—to be held November 19-22, 2009 at Emirates Palace in the capital city of the UAE, where the renowned Saadiyat Island Cultural District is now taking shape—the names of the members of the International Patrons Committee and new details of the programming.
Abu Dhabi Art is conceived as an integral part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term cultural vision, as the Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum and the Louvre Abu Dhabi rise on the shores of the Arabian Gulf and build their world-class collections. It is presented under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The Abu Dhabi Art International Patrons Committee is contributing the considerable talents of its individual members to the success of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Art. Committee members include:

Other important committees formed in support of Abu Dhabi Art include a Host Committee chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Salama bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan; an Abu Dhabi Board, made up of government and cultural leaders; and a special group to provide guidance to young and beginning collectors.
Newly Announced Program Highlights
A number of details have already been announced about the rich platform of cultural events created specifically for the inaugural edition of Abu Dhabi Art, many of them developed with Abu Dhabi’s international partners, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Louvre, New York University Abu Dhabi, Paris Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and the Sharjah Foundation. Significant new information was announced at the New York event. Coinciding with the opening of Abu Dhabi Art will be the opening of The Guggenheim: The Making of a Museum, the first exhibition in the Middle East of masterpieces from the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in collaboration with TDIC. In conjunction with the exhibition, leading art world thinkers will join with representatives from the Guggenheim in a panel discussion at Abu Dhabi Art, entitled “From Private to Public: Patronage and the Museum in the Modern Era.” Participants will include collectors Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson; Anthony d’Offay, founder, Anthony d’Offay Gallery;and Bruce Altshuler, Director of the Program in Museum Studies, New York University.
In coordination with New York University Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Art will present “Collecting Today,” a special panel on November 20 featuring Larry Gagosian, owner and CEO, Gagosian Gallery, and Dr. Roger Mandle, Executive Director, Qatar Museums Authority. These experts will give their perspectives on the current state of collecting, as well as provide tips for the discerning collector. “Collecting Today” will be moderated by Mariët Westermann, Provost, New York University Abu Dhabi and Professor of Fine Arts.
Another significant public event providing perspective on modern and contemporary art will be a lecture on “Alexander Calder: Movement, Abstraction and Reality” by Arnauld Pierre, professor of Contemporary Art History at Paris-Sorbonne University.
Initiatives that illuminate modern and contemporary art in the Middle East will include a showcase by important and influential not-for-profit Middle East institutions, including Townhouse Gallery (Cairo) and Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art (Jerusalem); the exhibition Disorientation II curated by Jack Persekian, as the inaugural presentation in the new Manarat al Saadiyat exhibition center developed by TDIC on Saadiyat Island; and the participation in Design Moment, a public, “live” design studio, of graphic designer Reem Al Ghaith (UAE), product designer Ahmed Angawi (Saudi Arabia), product designer Nedda El Asmar (Palestine), product designer Younes Duret (Morocco) and furniture designers Huda Baroudi and Maria Hibri of Bokja Design (Lebanon).
In another exciting design program, contemporary designers Max Lamb, Maarten Baas and Sevil Peach will lead day-long workshops, organized in collaboration with Vitra Design Museum, including panel discussions and a live performance.
