With “2 x 100 Best Posters at the MAK,” the MAK presents various aspects of graphic design. The exhibition “100 Best Posters 08. Germany, Austria, Switzerland” will introduce contemporary entries from the competition concluded this year, while “100 Beste Plakate aus Österreich” (100 Best Posters from Austria), will show the development from the early “corporate identity” of Secession art around 1900 to the requirements and aspirations of modern graphic design. In this second exhibition, the MAK will be showing selected items from its own collection, some of which will be exhibited publicly in Austria for the first time.
Highlights of the latter exhibition will include an unknown poster by Egon Schiele from 1913 documenting the artist’s first solo exhibition outside Austria, as well as an announcement for the 49th exhibition of the Secession in Vienna in 1918.
As a contrast to the historical examples, the MAK will also use “2 x 100 Best Posters at the MAK” as an opportunity to present for the fourth time the selections of an international expert jury with the simultaneous exhibition “100 Best Posters 08. Germany, Austria, Switzerland”. This exhibition concept arose as part of an interdisciplinary student project of the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences led by Nauka Kirschner and Hermann Weizenegger. The posters will be presented as portable banners.

Focus Graphic Art:
In the MAK Works on Paper Room, the extensive inventory of the library and Works on Paper Collection will be showcased highlighting different aspects in a series of exhibitions. The themes from recent years are evidence of the diversity of the program, which arises from the complexity of the collection: from contemporary graphic design, posters, artists' books, and architecture projects, through to ornamental prints and color wood cuts. In the "Year of Graphic Art" 2009, the various aspects of graphic design - from poster, drawing, through to printed books - will shift to the center of attention.
