Transition Gallery, London

Steve Richards and Rachel Cattle's Cosmographia is a journey through a maze of repeated and abstracted patterns and shapes exploring ideas of eternal recurrence and the hermetic/esoteric principle 'as above, so below'. The film has a hand built and drawn aesthetic, an operatic soundtrack and uses motifs that occur throughout Kubrick's The Shining. In Transition ShopSpace James Ryan creates intricate geometric paintings.

Steve Richards and Rachel Cattle
Cosmographia

Steve Richards and Rachel Cattle’s latest film Cosmographia, takes its title from a 16th century encyclopaedic record of the known and imagined worlds by the cartographer Sebastian Munster.

Richards and Cattle’s Cosmographia is a journey through a maze of repeated and abstracted patterns and shapes exploring ideas of eternal recurrence and the hermetic/esoteric principle ‘as above, so below’. The film has a hand built and drawn aesthetic, an operatic soundtrack and uses motifs that occur throughout Kubrick’s The Shining. Other eclectic influences come from the likes of Buckminster Fuller, P.D. Ouspensky and the films of Kenneth Anger.

-------

James Ryan
Transition ShopSpace

James Ryan creates intricate geometric paintings through the overlaying of transparent planes of colour. Within the paintings there is a somewhat traceable account of actions. A readable overlapping of layers generates unforeseen nuances of colour and a three dimensional space opens up with a distorted perspective and logic. Recent work has seen the introduction of checked fabrics, which act as a ready-made grid, yet undermine the work’s fine art credentials with hints of the domestic.

Ryan graduated from the RCA in 2007. In late 2010 he will have a solo show at Rod Barton Gallery, London. Other solo shows include Studio 1.1, London in 2009 and Parallax at The Corn Exchange Gallery, Edinburgh in 2008.Group shows include Auf der Spitze des Eisberg, Rod Barton Gallery, 2009; Planatacia x Abstractica, Standpoint Gallery (with Dan Pasteiner), 2009; and New Contemporaries, 2007. He is also included in the publication Younger Than Jesus, Artist Directory, published by Phaidon and the New Museum, New York.
