La Galleria Cesare Manzo presenta la seconda personale di Bob and Roberta Smith Make your own damn art, che fa seguito alla personale nella sede di Roma in cui è stata esposta una selezione di opere realizzate in occasione della mostra Altermodern, curata da Nicolas Bourriaud alla Tate Triennal di Londra nel 2009.

Bob and Roberta Smith usano l’humour per richiedere utopisticamente il coinvolgimento del pubblico. Con l’esortativa Fatti la tua maledetta arte (Make your own damn art) invitano ognuno a porsi interrogativi sull’Arte e sul ruolo che l’elitismo estetico deve giocare nella società di oggi. Mangiare biologico e riciclare non sono atti sufficienti ad arrestare la minaccia ecologica, Bob and Roberta Smith invitano a realizzare e diffondere nuovi progetti di tram, pannelli solari e mulini a vento, confidando nel potere democratico dell’arte. Non si fermano alla rappresentazione realistica del dato reale ma, secondo le modalità del divertissement e del gioco, sfruttano il valore del paradosso: l’arte può essere una forma di riscatto sociale, in grado di instaurare un nuovo approccio alle necessità e alle politiche ambientali. Slogan dal colorismo acceso e supporti di riuso sono per Bob and Roberta Smith uno strumento efficace di riflessione sulle tematiche ambientali. Attraverso l’utilizzo di espressioni ironiche e dissacranti, gli artisti denunciano i timori verso l’innalzamento del livello dei mari e l’eclissi di Venezia, per indurre lo spettatore a prenderne coscienza e agire. La pace – o il clima - ha bisogno di te sono frasi che invitano ad occuparsi dell’ambiente in modo personale e creativo.

“Essere creativi è davvero una buona idea” sostengono Bob and Roberta Smith. Ponendosi all’opposto di ciò che sosteneva Joseph Beuys, “Ognuno può essere un artista”, la loro idea è molto più semplice ed Inglese, è un modo di guardare alla creatività pensandola in maniera che non abbia nulla a che fare con il profitto economico. In occasione dall’inaugurazione avrà luogo un concerto che vedrà la partecipazione di due delle band con cui collaborano Bob and Roberta Smith, The Apaty Band e The Ken Ardley Playboys (London, UK).

Bob and Roberta Smith (Londra, 1963) vivono e lavorano a Londra. Durante gli anni ottanta hanno svolto un periodo di residenza presso la British School at Rome. Hanno partecipato ripetutamente a mostre di livello internazionale a New York, Parigi, Londra, Shangai, Tokio e Delhi. Make your own damn art

Galleria Cesare Manzo presents Bob and Roberta Smith’s second solo exhibition Make your own damn art, which follows the solo show in Rome, a selection of the works made for the Altermodern exhibition, curated by Nicolas Bourriaud for Tate Triennal of London in 2009.

Bob and Roberta Smith use humour to ask for a utopian help from the audience. With the exhortatory Make Your Own Damn Art, they invite us to question high art, and the role that aesthetic elitism has to play in society today. Eating organic food and recycling are no more adequate actions to stop the threats to the environment, Bob and Roberta Smith invite to create and circulate new designs of trams, solar panels and windmills, relying in the democratic power of art. They don’t just give a realistic portrait of reality but – using the language of divertissement and game – they make the most of paradox: art can be a form of social improvement, able to implement a new approach to environmental needs and policies.

For Bob and Roberta Smith, slogans with a great emphasis on colour and recycled materials are very effective tools to talk about environmental issues. By using ironic and irreverent expressions, the artists reveal their worries about the rise in sea levels and the eclipse of Venice, to make the audience aware of these problems and take action. Peace – or the climate – needs you are sentences that encourage to take care of the environment in a personal and creative way.

“Being creative is a really good idea” affirm Bob and Roberta Smith. As opposed to the idea put forward by Joseph Beuys who said that “Everybody can be an artist”, their idea is much more simple and English, it’s a way of looking at creativity and thinking in a way that’s not to do with money making. During the opening there will be a concert that will feature elements of two of the bands with which Bob and Roberta Smith use to play, the Apaty Band and the Ardley Playboys (London, UK)

Bob and Roberta Smith (London, 1963) live and work in London. During the 1980s, they spent a period of time as guests in the British School at Rome. They took part in international exhibitions in New York, Paris, London, Shanghai, Tokyo and Delhi.
