David Mutch

The Tourists is the latest exhibition from artist David Mutch – a series of digital photographic prints that explore the incongruous, awkward and sometimes hostile relationship between their protagonists and the natural environment. The Tourists will be held at Seventh Gallery from 24 February – 13 March 2010, launching on 24 February from 6-8pm.

Shot on the banks of the Yarra River, this body of work transforms a familiar landscape into a world of uncanny and alienating spaces. The figures in these images are miniscule in comparison to the imposing, engulfing landscape that surrounds them. Equipped with little or no luggage, the protagonists appear ludicrously ill prepared in their abstruse search, their lack of grace implying a similar anxiety when journeying inward. The Tourists’ exploration of perspective is continued in the dimensions of the prints themselves. In contrast to the large scale of much contemporary photography, the small scale of these images promotes an intimate physical relationship between the audience and the artwork presented.

David Mutch holds an Advanced Diploma of Photography from Photography Studies College, and is currently studying Bachelor of Fine Art (Photography) at RMIT. In 2008, he was awarded the City of Melbourne Young Artists’ Grant, and in August 2009 curated the Last Days Polaroid Project – an exhibition held at Blindside Gallery that investigated the ‘authenticity’ of the art object in postmodern society via the Polaroid’s demise.
