LFL Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by New York artist Phoebe
Washburn.
In recovering materials for her sculptural constructions, Washburn has inserted herself
into the civic ritual of disposal; her trips to loading docks and back alleys are dictated by
cyclic schedules of garbage removal and recycling collection. The retrieved materials are
accumulated and assembled into forms that recall basic sheltering structures (bothorganic and architectural).
The mass of collapsed boxes, the familiar texture of cardboard in bulk is overwhelming,
even disturbing: the forms expand into the gallery space, dwarfing all other objects,
threatening to swallow viewers and gallery workers alike. Washburn organizes her raw
materials in seductive waves: the organic contours of a whirlpool, or a topographical
map. Sections of the cardboard are painted institutional pale greens and pinks,
suggesting an administrative color-coding system gone seriously awry. WashburnÃs
constructions redefine the architectural urge, colliding chance and intent, the primal and
the bureaucratic.
Phoebe Washburn is a recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts MFA program. She
is a recipient of the 2003 Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation award. This will be
Phoebe's first solo exhibition in New York.
