More entrants and films in The Substation's annual festival for short films

Singapore Shorts Film Festival, Singapore's premiere dedicated international short film festival by The Substation - A Home for the Arts, returns for its second year with an increased number of film entries from all around the world. Launched in December last year, this year's festival will take place from 11 - 17 November 2002 in The Substation's Guinness Theatre.

Singapore Shorts Film Festival 2002 received over 100 entries worldwide, up from 80 plus last year - quite an achievement for such a young festival! Short film entries came from countries like India, USA, Australia, Romania, Argentina, and of course Singapore, and are of all genres - animation, narrative, documentary and experimental.

"Singapore Shorts embodies the philosophies of The Substation - it looks beyond genres and cultural differences and really wants to showcase originality and what we have termed 'Voice' - that is, the pure expression of ideas from the filmmaker," explains Yuni Hadi, Programme Executive, Film.

Last year, the festival gave out VOICE Awards to three filmmakers, one of which was to local filmmaker, Royston Tan, for his short film "Mother" which premiered at the festival. The other two VOICE Awards went to Richard Doherty for "My Chorus" and Todd Korgan for "The Man with the Empty Room", both from the USA.

Who will walk away with this year's three VOICE Awards? Audiences attending the festival will get to vote from six entries chosen by a panel of judges for the coveted awards. Judges this year include actor Adrian Pang, filmmakers Wee Li Lin and CheeK, film producer Juan Foo, and The Substation's Artistic Co-Director, Audrey Wong.

Fifty-five short films have been shortlisted for screening during the seven day run, and will be preceded by talks or workshops by award-winning local and foreign filmmakers such as Sun Koh, Tan Pin Pin, Felix Cheong and Graham Streeter.

This year, the festival will adopt a "Pay What You Want" scheme and The Substation hopes that audiences will give value to the works they will be watching by contributing generously to help and support The Substation to continue running its film programmes.

The 2nd Singapore Shorts Film Festival is sponsored by Lee Foundation and the Singapore Film Commission.
