BEYOND METAMORPHOSIS
BEYOND METMORPHOSIS, a site-specific installation by artist Victor Matthews commemorates in a touching way, the 2985 victims of the World Trade Center. Victor Matthews will paint monarch butterflies on 2985 umbrellas, which will be floating on the Hudson River between Piers 88 and 90, an area that has never been utilized during the previous editions of The Armory Show. This piece is particularly significant since the fair's venue, the Piers, was used as the Family Assistance Center and headquarters of the city's Emergency Response Command in the aftermath of September 11th. Victor Matthews was born in Brooklyn in 1963, and for many years has been living and working in a loft on Broadway, a few blocks below Canal Street. He was one of the many displaced residents who found refuge at the Piers in the days following the tragic events of 9/11. Beyond Metamorphosis is his personal thank you to the site and to all those who worked there helping New Yorkers recover. Beyond Metamorphosis will be a poignant and enriching homage to all New Yorkers and will also deepen the link between the creativity of the artistic community and the recovery process of our unique city.
