VALIE EXPORT:Ob/De+Con(Struction)

International House, Philadelphia

comunicato stampa

The Goldie Paley Gallery at Moore College of Art and Design is pleased to announce the Moore International Discovery Series 4: "," a survey of photographs and videos documenting early performance works, digital and conceptual photographic works, expanded cinema, large-scale video installations, and films by VALIE EXPORT. The Austrian artist's work has been shown in European exhibitions including the Venice Biennale of 1978 and 1980 and Documenta 6 (1977), but this is the first major American exhibition to examine the work of a taboo-breaking body artists who is also a leading innovator using modern technology in the visual arts.
Two iconic works-the original box for Tapp- und Tastkino (Touch Cinema, 1968), and 60 posters for Aktionshose: Genitalpanik (Action Pants: Genital Panic, 1969)-provide a basis for understanding the intensity and courage of her artistic achievement. In Touch Cinema, Export used her body as a projection screen. Strapping a curtained box to her chest, she stood on the street inviting passersby to raise the curtain and touch her breasts. In Genital Panic, she wore a pair of trousers with the crotch removed and walked up and down the rows in a movie house showing the "real thing" to an audience who had come to see films by artists. With these performance pieces, Export radically transformed woman from object to subject and confronted audiences unaccustomed or unable to replace fantasy with reality. "I am not a masochist," she explains, "because I am an artist, I must use powerful visual symbols . . . to portray the intensity of my message."
Committed to challenging stereotypes and expanding social consciousness through an oeuvre that is simultaneously aggressive and aesthetically refined, VALIE EXPORT has paved the way for many young artists working today. The forces of her vision and of her commitment are powerful harbingers of the new century.
