International Conference-Exhibit Program
on Independent Art Space
Hong Kong art organization 1aspace organizes IN-BETWEEN: International
Conference-Exhibit Program on Independent Art Space. Art workers from 15
cities will gather in Hong Kong to discuss various issues concerning art
space, art village, and cultural policy.
IN-BETWEEN program arises form an emerging global phenomenon of independent
art space, notably in the Asia. The mode of existence of these art
organizations reflects different states of public sphere in various cities.
In Hong Kong, non-government art organizations are facing changing
parameters of public policy in the recent years, such as the establishment of
Arts Development Council and the "community-driven" art scene envisioned by
the Cultural and Heritage Commission. The emergence of artist village first
in "Oil Street" and now in the former Cattle Depot is also significant in the
development of community art scene. At the dawn and in the site of the new
artist village, 1aspace initiated this project to exchange experience with
other cities and to pave the way for future collaboration among the
international art community.
