WHAT: The Community Word Project, a not-for-profit arts in education literacy
program, is throwing its second annual benefit in honor of the voices and
visions of under served New York City youth. A silent auction will feature
original artwork created by some of New York City's finest artists and inspired
by the poetry of the young beneficiaries of Community~Word. There will be
light hors d'oeuvres and an open wine bar. Tickets are $100 and 100% tax
deductible. All proceeds go to the Community~Word Project.
WHO: A reading by poets Mark Doty, Grace Schulman, Ernesto Quinonez and
CWP students. Performers will open the evening reading a poem written by
a group of Community~Word students. Artwork by Christo & Jeanne-Claude,
Susan Breen, Bridget Riley, Crash, Eve Andree Laramee, Amy Osborn & Rick
Moody.
Mark Doty is the author of five books of poems, including Sweet Machine
Atlantis, which received the Ambassador Book Award, the Bingham Poetry Prize,
and a Lambda Literary Award; My Alexandria, won the National Poetry Series,
the National Book Critics Circle Award and Britain's T. S. Eliot Prize,
and was also a National Book Award finalist.
Grace Schulman's collections include For that Day Only, Hemisphere's and
Burn Down the Icons. She is Poetry Editor of The Nation and Professor at
Baruch College, C.U.N.Y.
Ernesto Quiñonez was named a "Writer on the Verge" by the Village Voice
for his critically acclaimed novel, Bodega Dreams.
