What if

Art on the verge of architecture and design
WHAT IF is an
attempt to take the
temperature of
contemporary art
through focusing
on one of its
clearest trends -
the interest in
architecture and
design. Many
artists refer to - even cannibalise - these sister
disciplines for formalistic purposes and as an
expression of a longing for something concrete
and literal in a world where facts and fiction, the
virtual and the real meld more and more
together. But rather than present all the various
perspectives on architecture and design one
encounters in contemporary art, What if aims to
highlight and discuss how the relationship of art
to these areas van provide contemplative as well
as critical reflections for a continued discussion.
What if consists of three different but equally
important parts: an exhibition, three symposia -
or rather, a listen-in in the exhibition, and a
publication. The listen-ins involves artists,
architects, designers, city planners, media
people etc. The first listen-in, Shifting
places/Shifting scales, will take place at the
opening of the exhibition itself, and is a
collaboration between the School of
Architecture, KTH, in Stockholm and Moderna
Museet. The symposium will be held in English.
The publication, designed by the artist Pae
White, consists of a set of posters. It will function
as part of the exhibition rather than as a
reflection of it.
The exhibition is curated by Maria Lind and
filtered by Liam Gillick.
