In 1999 Mrs Beryl Whiteley generously made funds available to establish the Brett Whiteley Art Scholarship. The inspiration for this annual
scholarship was the profound effect of international travel and study experienced by her son, Brett Whiteley, as a result of winning the Italian
Travelling Art Scholarship at the age of 20.
"Winning the scholarship put Brett in the right place at the right time. After six months in Italy, he arrived in London with a folio of studies and
drawings to approach the art galleries. He could hardly believe his good luck when at the end of his first day he had an offer of a one man show
at the Molton Gallery and a mixed show at McRoberts and Tunnard," said Mrs Whiteley.
The Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship is open to Australian artists aged between 20 and 30 years. The recipient is awarded $25,000 and
a 3 month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, which is administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
The judges for the 2002 Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship are artist, Margaret Olley, Edmund Capon, Director of the Art Gallery of New
South Wales and Barry Pearce, Head Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
