SECOND ANNUAL REEL NEW YORK WEB

Thirteen/WNET, New York

A showcase for web artists.
REEL NEW YORK, Thirteen/WNETs annual series of local independent film and video, and wNetStation, Thirteens award-winning Web site, this spring will launch the second annual REEL NEW YORK WEB, an online showcase of outstanding Web-based work by artists in the New York metropolitan area. The showcase is being presented in conjunction with REEL NEW YORK, Thirteens annual TV series of outstanding independent film and video made by artists in the New York metropolitan area. Together, these two showcases from Thirteen present an expanded view of cutting-edge new media in the New York area.

Up to a dozen works will be selected for the Web art showcase, which goes online in June 2000. Each artist will receive a $500 honorarium and their work and biography will be featured. Nominations will be accepted from the general public, Web artists and organizations through a form on wNetStation or via email. Nominations will also be made by Thirteen staff and advisers.
Final selections will be made jointly by Carl Goodman, Curator of Digital Media at the American Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, N.Y., who is serving as curatorial consultant to the project, and Anthony Chapman, Director of wNetStation and Online Programs at Thirteen, with input and assistance from the REEL NEW YORK WEB Advisory Board.

If you have a work that you would like to enter, please submit your entry via the REEL NEW YORK site (www.thirteen.org/reelnewyork) or by sending email directly to reelnewyorkweb@thirteen.org. Be sure to include your name, phone number, email address, and Web address where your work resides. To be considered, submissions must include contact information and the work must meet the criteria described below. No other forms of media will be accepted. The deadline for submissions is February 25, 2000.

In order to highlight Web-based art whose independent vision most closely resembles the independent vision of the films/videotapes presented in the TV series, REEL NEW YORK WEB has specified some broad criteria for the Web art to be considered. The work must:
-- be designed for, and currently available, on the Web;
-- be created primarily by artist(s) residing in the New York metropolitan area;
-- be the result of an independent, not a corporate, vision;
-- creatively employ the capabilities and limitations of the Web as a medium for expression;
-- be able to be linked to directly.

Selected artists will be contacted after March 17, 2000. REEL NEW YORK WEB will premiere online in June 2000. REEL NEW YORK WEBs Advisory Board is made up of prominent members of the metropolitan arts community.
They include: Kathy Brew of Thundergulch, Kevin Duggan of the New York Foundation for the Arts, Carl Goodman of the American Museum of the Moving Image, Cheryl Harris of Northstar Interactive, Carol Parkinson of Harvestworks, Beth Rosenberg of Eyebeam Atelier, and Sarah Tucker of Dia Center of the Arts. Season Five of the REEL NEW YORK television series begins in early June, only on Thirteen, and airs for eight weeks. REEL NEW YORK WEB will be online for two years.

wNetStation will also present a Web companion to the television series, as it has for several seasons past, with video clips from the films and videos, interviews with and photos of the filmmakers, a printable festival calendar, and resources for artists. Check it out online beginning in early June on wNetStation. REEL NEW YORK WEB is partially supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
