Art and Photography: When actions recall Press photos that have gone around the world - La Pieta du Kosovo (Mérillon-Gamma 1989) and La Madone de Benthala (Hocine-AFP, 1997) - have inspired recent works by Pascal Convert. These works (Mudam Collection) will be the subject of Conversation 04. How does an image become a symbol? What is its political and aesthetic dimension? What impact does it have on the making, recalling and forgetting of history? So many questions for our guests to ponder:
Pascal Convert (France) Starting from a classic technique Pascal Convert has recently produced a series of wax sculptures based on press photos. The result is disturbing and stagger all interpretation.
Georges Didi-Huberman (France) Art Historian and Philosopher, Didi-Huberman teaches at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He is the author of numerous essays and of a monograph on Pascal Convertx{2019}s work.
Georges Mérillon (France) Press Photographer with the Gamma agency, he has twice received the prestigious World Press Prize for his war photos. His work aims to show what is happening in a direct, unvarnished way.
Hocine Zaourar (Algeria) Self taught, the photographer has worked for the France-Presse Agency since 1993. His famous photograph, the so-called Madona of Benthala, has received seven awards including the World Press Prize.
Conversations is a three-monthly cycle of discussions aimed at the public at large. Mudam has invited people from all walks of contemporary creative and cultural life to share their passion for art connected with everyday life.
