Bitches Brew. A new and site specific performing work
For the exhibition 'Many many women' by German painter Silke Otto-Knapp currently on view, Koether has created a new and site specific performing work that takes as its inspiration from two protagonists of the exhibition: Florine Stettheimer and Gertrude Stein. The title 'Bitches brew' is taken from an album of the jazz musician Miles Davis from 1970 and points to the many references she draws within her work. As a painter, Jutta Koether operates in a multifaceted playing field of performance, music, writing, art critique and theory, hence enriching and challenging the art scene of New York ever since her move to this city in the 1990s. In addition Koether is known for her successful collaborations with musicians such as Tom Verlaine (Television) and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), her contributions to the music magazine Spex (as editor and co-publisher) and for her independent contributions to numerous international art journals.
