Assassination Day
Philadelphia born Joseph Church graduated this year with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art
from City and Guilds of London Art School. Previous to this he studied at Pratt
Institute, Brooklyn, New York and the Art Institute of Philadelphia.
Church is trained in illustration as well as Fine Art and is an experienced
graffiti artist. His paintings are a balanced synthesis of all these
disciplines. The most instant impact is that of the graffiti artist. Characters
are set against flat colour grounds or layers of varnish and mixed materials
including spray-can. Combined with various abstract mark-making techniques and
occasional stylised tag writing Churchs work is urban and immediate. However,
this belies a deep sensitivity and sense of melancholy implied by the
expressions of his finely rendered isolated figures painted in cold
monochromatic blues.
In essence we are presented with a selection of poetic and highly compositional
works. And whilst adhering to this street aesthetic they always retain their
instant accessibility. Churchs work is enchanting as well as charming and
serves as an expression of an insular and symbolic world defined by a delicate
fusion of various disciplines that is underpinned by a freedom to create.
