We are the islands

Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien, Berlin

Three-Day Exhibition with 30 Artists from Japan. As each of us is an island, each of us sets course to break a solitary existence, to look for another island, to communicate and share hope. Every new island is a new line of communication, a new set of possibilities, hence, it is not surprising that so many artists travel abroad, change residence, go somewhere else. For the thirty Japanese artists and one Korean artist in this exhibition, who made such a journey, Berlin is the shore of that new island.

We are so far away and so close.
We are so different and so the same.
We are so alone and so communicative.

This impromptu exhibition attempts to give a glimpse of the diversity of practices represented by Japanese artists living in Berlin – but its interest certainly goes beyond the narrow framework of nationality and rather has developed and is still developing through these artists’ choice to relocate to Berlin. This exhibition aims to open up a new contemporary intercultural experience beyond nationalities, regions and races, in the international art city of Berlin.

This event will be followed by a series of exhibitions at a new artist run centre at the Bethanien. This space will be dedicated to artists and curators, who are actively engaged in the development of community and the sharing of ideas and resources with each other and with others around the world.
