the World Financial Center Arts & Events Program and Creative Time
launch Sonic Garden, a rare sonic exhibition
commissioned for the Winter Garden, a stunning
waterfront landmark located in The World Financial
Center in Battery Park City.
Broadcast daily
through November 30th, Sonic Garden will feature new
audio commissions by visionary artists
Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Marina Rosenfeld, and
Ben Rubin.
Using the Winter Garden's
state of the art sound system, each artist is
creating a site-specific work that can be experienced
through speakers in the atrium's palm trees, stairs,
and surrounding air vents.
From Marina
Rosenfeld's recordings of stones skipping across
bodies of water and David Byrne's jokes of
famed Catskill comedians to Laurie Anderson's string
ensemble and Ben Rubin's sound
interpretation of the New York Mercantile Exchange,
each project is designed to delight and
encourage reflection while creating a sensory
experience which heightens the audience's sense
of the Winter Garden's voluminous architecture and
surroundings. While the projects are varied,
each celebrates the renewal of Lower Manhattan, the
reopening of the Winter Garden, and the
return of thousands of workers to the area.
