Jude Rae's still life paintings and charcoal drawings are easily described as Morandi-like. The likeness however is a passing one. Rae claims a different heritage more anchored in realist traditions. In her current exhibition at Gitte Weise Gallery the Sydney artist examines ordinary objects grouped together to form compositions which sometimes vary only slightly from work to work.

In her current exhibition at Gitte Weise Gallery the Sydney artist examines
ordinary objects grouped together to form compositions which sometimes vary
only slightly from work to work.
We assume so much about seeing and the visual world. Our lives are geared
to a kind of shorthand of vision. Perhaps it is this that has made the
visible so closely associated with certainty. Seeing becomes believing.
These paintings partake in what Rae describes as "a poetics of description"
which does not so much challenge normal vision as quietly recall the
attention to something which might otherwise be overlooked.
