Transitio

Duration: 1 hour and 3 minutes Location: 17.3 miles

November 2002 Art & Idea is pleased to present a solo exhibition by New York based Brazilian artist Solange Fabiao. In this exhibition Fabiao will show the video installation titled Duration: 1 hour and 3 minutes Location: 17.3 miles, the first part of the on-going project Transitio. To be exhibited in Mexico City, Duration: 1 hour and 3 minutes - Location: 17.3 mile exercises an intended global dialogue, embodying a "city within a city."

For this installation Fabiao has documented 17.3 miles of Broadway filmed from the vantage of a Taxi passenger starting at 228th Street (border of Manhattan and the Bronx) and ending near Wall Street. New York Citys famed Broadway has historical significance as Manhattan's first major thoroughfare and to this day the only one to diagonally cross all of Manhattan. Encompassing many neighborhoods and economic conditions Duration: 1 hour and 3 minutes - Location: 17.3 mile threads a non-linear narrative of multiple stories that are a compression of thousands of moments.

Alluding to time lapsing and the essence of randomness the double-sided DVSculpture, the sculptural/video installation itself redefines the gallery's given configuration creating a dual viewpoint that allows the audience the option to view the work from opposing points.

Solange Fabiao was born in Rio de Janeiro and studied Architecture and Set Design. She lived and studied in Berlin from 1989 to 1994. Fabiao's work has been exhibited in the US and in Europe, where in 1997 she took part in the 47th Venice Biennial presenting the Internet project Cyberclone 2000 and the performance Sheep Dialog. She has conceptualized the lighting design for the Miami Heat Basketball Stadium, commissioned by Lobservatoire International titled Internal Sunrise. In 1999 Fabiao, in collaboration with Steven Holl Architects received honorable mention from the SAFA (the Finnish Association of Architects) for their competition project Xky Xcraper, in Vuosaari, Finland.
