In this latest body of work, Keith Kettle fuses the fantasy world of early sci-fi comics, books and films with an interest in Surrealism, Vortism and Futurism. He uses the traditional medium of oil painting and the formal elements of symmetry and perspective to articulate a contemporary subject matter.
Studio Voltaire presents Keith Kettle's solo exhibition Å’To a World Unknown'
as its final show for the 2002 programme. The show focuses on a subject
Kettle has been developing and exploring since studying at Wimbledon School
of Art.
In this latest body of work, Kettle fuses the fantasy world of early sci-fi
comics, books and films with an interest in Surrealism, Vortism and
Futurism. He uses the traditional medium of oil painting and the formal
elements of symmetry and perspective to articulate a contemporary subject
matter.
His skill as a draughtsman allows him to create intricate technical drawings
of complex structures, which he sets against a backdrop of unforgiving
futuristic landscapes. Yet it is the tactile quality of the paint that
contradicts the implied surfaces of these man-made structures and results in
skewing the context of these engineering works identified with science and
industry.
The exhibition presents an insight into Kettle's view of a world of
increasing automation - cynical, cold and still. This is a vision of a
futuristic world beyond human influence, the world of the machine.
