Talk: A Perspective on Visual Arts in Egypt

sintesi del comunicato stampa

Cairo-based independent curator Aleya Hamza looks at the points of tension between individuals and the authorities as they are mediated through visual art practices set in Cairo. She discusses a selection of street art stemming out of the revolution, and two earlier art projects shown in the context of PhotoCairo4: The Long Shortcut (2008-2009) and Tales around the Pavement (2007-2008). Aleya Hamza's talk is part of programme of international curatorial exchanges developed in partnership with Tate Modern and supported by the World Collections Programme. These involve reciprocal residences, providing opportunities for research and development, and are followed by an exhibition organised as part of the Level 2 Exhibitions Programme at Tate Modern. During her visit to London, Hamza will work towards an exhibition co-curated with Kasia Redzisz (Assistant Curator, Tate Modern), to be presented in 2012 at Level 2 Gallery of Tate Modern and at Contemporary Image Collective, Cairo. Earlier this year, Gasworks hosted Jude Anogwih, Assistant Curator at the Centre of Contemporary Art, Lagos, Nigeria, who has been working in partnership with Kerryn Greenberg (Assistant Curator, Tate Modern) to curate Contested Terrains, a group exhibition opening at Tate Modern's Level 2 Gallery on 29 July 2011.
