A combat/dance/theatre performance by The And So No Sin Performance Troupe
Performances Friday & Saturday 8 pm, Sunday 3 pm

Tired of the cheery holidays? Can't wait for all the "fun" to be over? Come explore your dark side with a post-holiday evening of blood, guns and real-life mayhem from The And So No Sin Performance Troupe. Come watch And So No Sin illuminate seven dastardly acts of violence fresh from their Director's everyday life. From friendly violence to greedy violence to good ol' senseless brutality and bricks, this hired gang of innocents find themselves performing combat with far more realism than they seem prepared to face. Is that real blood? A real knife? How authentic can violence get before someone gets hurt for good?

We're not sure if this is dance, theatre, or even art but we can guarantee that it's bloody, mostly true, anything but mindless and at least a little bit funny. Funny? Why, certainly! This wouldn't be And So No Sin if we didn't make a joke out of the whole affair. From Nerf gun battles to verbal insults that draw blood, we have vengeance, roughhousing and enough sticky-sweet wounds to cover all that holiday "happy" for good. And as a special treat, the Sunday matinee performance will be followed by an extended Q&A period so as to answer queries concerning the arts of stage combat, basic blood effects, very small explosions and stage weaponry (and you can teach US stuff too).

The And So No Sin Performance Troupe has been credited with rescuing the World of Dance from stagnation, being both "provocative" and "youthful" and has even had their leader recklessly labeled a "mohawked gamine". Need we say more? All right, then. Since 1998 And So No Sin has been dedicated to revolution. Utilizing the (un)conventions of performance art, postmodern dance and stage combat, And So No Sin strives to fill the void of funny, interesting, cheap and controversial live art here in Boston and beyond.

FREEZE
January 10-February
1nstallation by Lauren Petty & Shaun Irons
Gallery Hours: Wednesday-Saturday 12-5 pm
Opening Reception: Friday, January 10, 6-8 pm

Freeze is a video and audio installation offering a meditation on loss, the cyclical nature of time, and the desire to hold onto beauty. This work is a two-channel video installation comprised of a central large-scale projection and two monitors. The projected image reveals a beautiful dying fish, spinning eerily, reflected in a mirror, creating the illusion of dancing twins. This central projection goes through a series of transformations, rising in visual and aural intensity, augmenting the sense of spiritual release. The two small monitors contain images of layered swirling snow, sailing ships slowly moving across the ocean, and a lonely road at dusk, all silently echoing the fish's journey into death.

Our work often examines the diverse emotional terrain of memory, time, and place, by combining video, audio and film to create different layers of reality, blurring the boundaries between fact and fantasy, between location and time. Following intuition, we remain creatively open to the subconscious and dream states. Collisions, accidents and chance occurrences combine to create new rhythms and solutions. We use video as a fine art medium, layering and juxtaposing images in a painterly manner, paying attention to the tiniest details of color and contrast, and by controlling the flow of motion and speed. By manipulating and investigating the unique capabilities of new digital technology, we seek to create a balance between a complex, visually compelling work, and one that resonates emotionally.

Shaun Irons is a visual artist and performer who has appeared with The Wooster Group in New York and on numerous international tours, including the Melbourne Festival in Australia and at the Pompidou Center in Paris as part of the Festival d'Automne. He has had several solo exhibitions of paintings and collages in New York. Lauren Petty is a video artist, editor and teacher. She is a graduate of New York University's Gallatin school, where she received a degree in Video Art & Performance. She is currently the Education Coordinator and a video editor at Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center, and teaches digital video production at The New School University.

Shaun and Lauren have been collaborating on video projects for the past several years. Their work has been exhibited in diverse locations in New York and internationally. They are recipients of a 2002 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Video.
