Maraya Art Centre to showcase unique exhibit during Islamic Art Festival
Works of celebrated artist Maïmouna Patrizia Guerresi will be on display

Al Qasba, the premier tourist, cultural and entertainment destination in the emirate of Sharjah, is delighted to announce that the Maraya Art Centre will be showcasing the works of celebrated artist Maïmouna Patrizia Guerresi during the Islamic Art Festival of Sharjah.
Maïmouna Guerresi’s solo show, called Haqiqat – al aburuj (Inner constellations), will premiere on 2 November 2011 and will run until 14 January 2012.

As a photographer, sculptor, video and installation artist, she offers unique and authentic sensibilities in her visual narration of the beauty and subtleties associated with racial diversity and multiculturalism. The works that form part of Haqiqat – al aburuj, which will be showcased for the first time in the UAE, consist of a variety of media – including video, sculpture, and photography – and is aimed at helping viewers experience a mystical initiation process in order to access their inner worlds and sacred expressions.

Says Giuseppe Moscatello,Curator at Maraya Art Centre: “We are honoured extremely proud and excited to welcome Maïmouna Patrizia Guerresi to the Maraya Art Centre. She is an extraordinary artist, whose work is inspired by personal experience and cultural contexts, making it uniquely authentic, and we look forward to sharing her vision with visitors.”

Maïmouna has, over an established career, developed her own symbolism that combines cosmological and ancestral traditions belonging to various European, African and Asian cultures. Her work offers a unique perspective on the relationship between women and society, with particular reference to those countries in which the role of women is most marginalized, and she draws her creative inspiration from her personal story, which transcends social, cultural and religious borders.

For this occasion will be published a catalog in English and Arabic, The 1,500m² Maraya Art Centre was officially launched in March 2010 as one of the UAE’s most spectacular venues for contemporary visual arts. The three-storey art centre offers immaculate gallery space, in addition to The Shelter and the permanent Barjeel Art Foundation exhibition, and serves as a stage for creative experimentation while bearing testament to the region’s extraordinary artistic genius.
