Athica: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art
Socratic Rap - performance
For ATHICA Anne Waldman, the beat-era legend, feminist poet & performance artist, will present works written in response to renowned visual artists such as Red Grooms, Elizabeth Murray, Kiki Smith, Pat Steir & Richard Tuttle, as well as those produced as part of editions produced for celebrated Granary Books, produced editions with Carolee Schneeman, Susan Rothenberg & Donna Dennis. She will also talk about the process of collaborating with the artists as well as answer any other audience questions during a Q & A session following her performance. In addition to the performance, two short war-protest videos which Waldman created in collaboration with spouse Ed Bowe-Colors in the Mechanism of Concealment (2004, 7 minutes) & Screen Screen Text (2009/2010, 8 minutes)-will be screened. Both take-on recent wars: the first addresses the U.S. imprisonment tragedy at Guantanamo Bay detention center, and the second one takes a text from her anti-war epic The Iovis Trilogy and puts it in the mouth of poet-performer Alaina Ferris as well as incorporating lines from Virginia Woolf. $6 Suggested Donation (but no one turned away).
