Von Lintel Gallery is pleased to present an informal survey of Abstraction in Photography. Exhibited are the works of 16 artists, who share the creative focus on the non-objective, yet have developed different approaches and techniques within the photographic medium. Challenging the notion of this genre, whose original fascination relied on the medium's extraordinary ability to authentically replicate an object, these artists push the pictorial qualities of Abstract Photography in order to define new aesthetics and larger concepts. Instead of being used as mere means of representation, the abstract photographs become the artistic goal, the object themselves.

In the exhibition, the viewer will encounter three general paths to abstraction, including objective abstract photographs that capture a recognizable subject in an unusual way, non-objective abstract photographs that derive their imagery from a non-recognizable subject (often constructed by the artists themselves), as well as photographic works that eliminate the use of the camera altogether.
Within these three general directions, various aesthetics are established, ranging from conceptual to spiritual, from minimalist and geometric structures to romantic mysticism. The subtext underlying the works, however, remains similar and can be summarized as the artists' urge to transform the ordinary by revealing the beauty in images that often seem to appear "artless". Through their intuition and by truly mastering the potential of this medium, these artists succeed in creating a highly individual and symbolic photographic vocabulary.

Abstraction in Photography documents the artistic belief that the distance between reality and abstraction is minimal; that the creative possibilities within this medium are endless. The works on view are by: Gaston Bertin, Marco Breuer, William Eggleston, Winfred Evers, Roland Fischer, Adam Fuss, Steffen Kluge, David Maisel, Vik Muñiz, Hanno Otten, Jack Pierson, Sean Scully, Andres Serrano, Wolfgang Tillmans, Juan Uslé, James Welling, Michael Wesely.

Opening reception: Thursday, February 6, from 6 to 8 PM
