Celebrating African Books
Country focus: Ghana
Access to information is Africa's greatest need. The Zimbabwe International Book Fair is Africa's information
and publishing showcase -- the largest and most diverse exhibition of books, magazines, journals, CD-ROM
and publishing and printing technology and services in sub-Saharan Africa (including South Africa).
A vital meeting place for the literary cultures of North and South and a viable marketplace for books and
information to, from, for and about Africa, the ZIBF is held annually during the first week of August in a unique
ethnic garden exhibition centre in central Harare. The Fair is administered by an independent Trust, comprising a
broad cross-section of Zimbabwe's book industry.
Harare has become internationally recognized as the "Book Capital of Africa". Its developed and efficient
infrastructure (including superb hotels and worldwide telecommunications and transport links), friendly people
and sophisticated economy make it the ideal setting for the Book Fair.
Each year the ZIBF has a theme, with the aim of highlighting a particular aspect of the book and information
sector, within the context of the Book Fair and its accompanying events programme as a whole. The theme is
not exclusive in any sense, but presents opportunities for particular issues and interests to be raised.
