Studio Voltaire presents Turpentine, the first ever exhibition of work by
current and past Gallery Assistants from the Serpentine Gallery.
For many years the Serpentine has provided flexible part-time employment to
artists as a way of earning an income to support their practice. In the
first exhibition of its kind, their work will go on show at Studio Voltaire
in Clapham. Turpentine aims to highlight the wealth of art practice and
debate behind the conventional face of an internationally renowned
institution. Turpentine will include work in a range of media such as
photography, video, painting, embroidery, sculpture, performance and
artists' books.
Organised by current Gallery Assistants Joe Scotland and Laura Aldridge
(also exhibitors), Turpentine will feature the work of past Gallery
Assistants who are now established artists, including Anna Barriball, Jordan
Baseman, Sophie Horton, Brighid Lowe, Caroline McCarthy, Alison Turnbull and
Rachel Whiteread.
Julia Peyton-Jones, Director of the Serpentine Gallery said:
"Serpentine Gallery Assistants play a vital role in our Exhibition,
Architecture and Education Programme. Turpentine brings together the work
of Gallery Assistants past and present to celebrate the breadth and quality
of their own artistic practice. I could not be more delighted by this
initiative."
There will be a gallery discussion on 16 March at 2pm at Studio Voltaire,
exploring the themes of the show, and the role of the artist in a cultural
institution. Speakers will include Fiona Boundy, Director of Gasworks and

O''Neill, artist and curator, London Print Studio and Darren Rhymes, artist.
